RAINBOW RECREATION: BIRDWATCHING
FACILITATED BY AVERY FOLLETT
Outlink is holding another birdwatching walk this summer! We’re excited to have Avery Follett (they/them) facilitate this year’s walk again. On Wednesday, July 17th, we will be at Carburn Park (67 Riverview Dr SE) for an afternoon of birdwatching and hanging out in the park.
We will be meeting directly at Carburn Park at 12:00 PM, at the Carburn Park Loop (11 Riverview Point SE).
Click here to register on Eventbrite. Registration through Eventbrite is required to attend. This event is free to attend at no cost, with the option to purchase a pay-what-you-want ticket. The suggested ticket price is $10, but you are welcome to pay as much or as little as you want. Ticket proceeds will cover event costs, and support Outlink’s ongoing services and programming.
During the registration process, please let us know if you will be needing a ride to the park. We may be able to help facilitate limited carpooling from CommunityWise Resource Centre (223 12 Ave SW). There will be additional questions regarding any accessibility concerns as well.
We encourage folks to sign up as early as possible. We will be limiting the number of participants to 10 people maximum to create a comfortable facilitation experience, and being mindful that a larger group may make bird observation more challenging.
Free parking spaces are available at the park. Nearby bus routes that pass close to the park include 24 - Ogden (at Riverbend Community Association), 36 - Riverbend (at EB Riverbend DR @ Riverview DR SE), and 41 - Lynnwood (at EB Riverbend DR @ Riverview DR SE).
Other accessibility considerations:
-
The walk will take around 45 minutes. Carburn Park includes paved walking paths that begin at the parking lot and circulate throughout the entire park.
-
Should any participants require the use of a mobility aid, service animal, or other accessibility tool, this activity will be performed within the paved sections of the park. This activity may be moved onto unpaved walking paths that run through the forested sections of the park if participants unanimously agree to do so.
-
Carburn Park is very popular during all months of the year. This activity will take place during Carburn Park's normal hours of operation, meaning that the park will be open to the public during this event.
-
It is likely that this activity will occur around leashed dogs, children, strollers, runners, cyclists, and pedestrians. Please be aware that the environment can be sonically overstimulating, as it is just across Highway 2 from Deerfoot Meadows.
-
For those who would appreciate a less stimulating experience, you may wear noise-canceling headphones, or travel slightly ahead of the group.
-
Please come dressed for the weather and prepared to walk. We recommend bringing sunscreen, bug spray, and water. If you have your own pair of binoculars, please do bring it with you. A smartphone camera can also be used to zoom in on wildlife.
If you have a smartphone, we highly recommend downloading the Merlin Bird ID app to enhance your experience. This app functions as a free and portable bird identification book. After downloading the bird pack associated with your geographic region (Western Canada is recommended), the app will provide a searchable database of bird species and numerous tools for on-the-spot identification, including a Shazam-like function that can identify birds based on their sounds. The app requires an Internet connection or data to download the initial bird pack, but then can be used without Internet or data.
If you have any additional concerns or questions, please reach out to Avery at averyfollett@hotmail.com, or text (587) 220-4299.
